Obituary for Bonita Faye Prince

Bonita “Bonnie” Prince, of Brighton, passed away on Tuesday, March 01, 2017 surrounded by her loving family. She was 64 years old.

Bonnie was born in Zeeland, Michigan on November 24, 1952. Raised in Holland with her siblings, she graduated from Hamilton High School in 1970. She met the love of her life Mark Prince at the age of 16 while they were co-workers at the Salad Bowl restaurant. They later married, and began raising their four children in Holland before moving to Brighton in 1988. Bonnie worked as office manager for the family business for many years, and later was employed by Cornerstone Church in Brighton, where she was also a charter member.

Bonnie was known for many things, but ultimately it was her infectious smile and engaging personality that defined her, even after a horseback riding accident left her paraplegic in 2003 . Always anxious to share a hug, she seldom allowed the conversation to focus on her disability, but would instead insist on dwelling on the lives of the family, friends or stranger she was talking with. Faith in Christ, and a commitment to her family as wife, mother, and later grandmother were the driving forces in her life.

Her courage and her ability to cheerfully persist during her many years confined to a wheelchair was an inspiration to all those she met. Her love for animals was unbounded, especially horses, and her service dog “Hobbes”, a faithful companion and helper for many years. One of the high points in her life was in 2014 when at a ranch in Kingman Arizona she was able to utilize special equipment to get back in the saddle and enjoy one more ride. Her Facebook world cheered with her as she posted her ride around the ranch.

She also developed a talent for painting in the later years of her life, capturing the scenery in Arizona, and later in Florida, where she loved the sun, many new friends, and watching the Detroit Tigers in spring training.

She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Mark Prince; children, Matthew (Christina) Prince, Melissa (Philip) Wilhelm, Michael (Amanda) Prince, and Mary Kaplan; grandchildren, Ethan, and Molly Prince, Benjamin, Elizabeth, and Charlie Wilhelm, Andrew, Kaitlyn, and Nathan Prince, and Jacob Kaplan; also many extended family and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her mother and father.

Visitation will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 600 East Main St. Brighton on Monday, March 6, 2017 from 4 - 8pm.
