Blandina J. Parker, formerly of Hammond, Indiana and Marquette, Michigan, died in the care of her family and Arbor Hospice at Caretel Inn of Brighton on Wednesday morning, August 5, 2009 after a year-long struggle with cancer. She was 60 years old. Born in the Philippines on May 10, 1949, she was the daughter of Benjamin and Felisa (Lomigo) Jayona. After graduating from high-school, she met and married an American Navy serviceman, Clark Parker, in 1973 and after living in Japan, moved with him to America in 1977, settling in Marquette, Michigan. Following his death in 2003, she moved to Hammond, Indiana to be near her sister, Jemima and family, later coming to Brighton to be cared for by her daughter, Misiel, in her final illness.
Mrs. Parker worked as a housekeeper, loved cooking and caring for her family, bowling and bingo and going to the casino. Even after she was diagnosed with cancer and confined to a wheelchair, her family would take her out for an evening to play the slots.
In addition to her beloved daughter, Misiel (Charles) Conlen of Brighton and her sister, Jemima (Joe) Maldonado of Hammond, she is survived by her grandchildren, Manelle and Riley Conlen, her sister Febe (Segundo) Santiago and a brother, Roger Jayona in the Philippines, her nephew, Jose (Gina) Maldonado in Hammond and many more nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law in the Philippines, Marquette, Michigan and elsewhere who join with her family in mourning her death and giving thanks to God for her life among them.
Funeral services for Blandina Parker will be held on Thursday, August 6, 2009 at 7PM at the Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 600 East Main Street, in Brighton. Fr. Mark Rutherford, of St. Patricks Church, will officiate. Cremation will follow. Friends may visit at the funeral home on Thursday from 5 PM until the time of service.
