Obituary for Betty J. Dobar

Betty Jane Dobar, a resident of Brighton and formerly of Huntington Woods, passed away peacefully on December 23, 2012 after a long, courageous battle with cancer. She was 59 years old.

She was born on October 20, 1953 in Huntington Woods, Michigan, the youngest daughter of Martin and Vevia Wiersma. She graduated from Berkley High School and earned her Bachelor Degree in Accounting and Masters in Finance from Walsh College. For over 23 years, Betty enjoyed her work with the Huron Clinton Metro Parks and retired three years ago.

In 1985, Ken and Betty were married and later made their home in Brighton. Betty fell in love with Hawaii when the couple traveled there on their honeymoon and enjoyed three return visits. She found comfort in quilting, sewing and crafts and staying active in her community and relays for life. Betty liked to read novels and solve sudoku puzzles in her spare time.

She is survived by her loving husband of 27 years, Ken Dobar; sisters, Carol (John) Henry and Vicki Purdon; brother, Richard (Marie) Wiersma; nieces and nephews, David (Jan) Henry, Diane (Tom) Pedersen, Danyl (Michael) Winkler, James (Monica) Purdon; great nieces and nephews, Hailey Pedersen, Michael Jr., Daniel, Kayla, Kerryn, Elaina, Aiden, Terese, Gwendolyn and Phillip Winkler, Garrett and Garth Hollis, Trevor and Rylie Purdon and many extended family and friends.

A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, December 28 at First United Methodist Church of Brighton, 400 East Grand River Avenue at 11:30 AM. The Rev. Dr. Sherry Parker officiating. Friends may visit Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 600 E. Main Street, Brighton on Thursday from 3-8 PM.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to the American Cancer Society.
