Obituary for Arthur E. Larson

Arthur E. Larson, 97, passed away January 19, 2018 in Brighton, Michigan. Art was born July 18, 1920 in Akron, Ohio to Anders and Selma Larson. He grew up in a Swedish community and enjoyed the company of his brother, Alvin and sister, Astrid.

Art married his high school sweetheart Hazel Hobbs Larson and they had 35 years together. They raised four children, enjoyed summers on Long Lake in Traverse City. Hazel died in 1977.

Art met Barbara McClellan (a widow) while they both worked for Ford Motor Company. They married in 1981 and enjoyed 37 years together on Long Lake in Traverse City, winters in Venice, Florida and finally the move to Brighton to be near family.

Art is survived by children Alvin (Janet) Larson, Susan (Steven) Anderson, John (Debra) Larson, Arthur E. Jr. (Connie) Larson and stepsons Robert (Gail) McClellan and Brett (Donna) McClellan. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Art was preceded in death by his parents, brother and sister.

Art served in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II, from 1942 until the end of hostilities in 1946, rising to the rank of Major. He enjoyed a long career as an executive in the automotive business and retired after 30 years with the Ford Motor Company in 1981.

Art loved his family, was anchored in his strong faith, and enjoyed singing bass in church choirs from college days until late in life. He also enjoyed spending time with his family golfing, sailing and boating with family and friends on Long Lake in Traverse City. He had a very strong fondness for his faithful golden retriever companions, Kara and Taffy, who walked by his side for many, many years.

Among his many volunteer activities during his long life were: the Plymouth Symphony; serving many years on the Long Lake Association (president, treasurer, etc.); working on the building on the replica sailing ship Madeline; and doing taxes each year for AARP.

His parting words to friends and family were always “Keep Smiling”.
