Obituary for Anne Marie Okey

Anne Marie (nee Smith) Okey, of Brighton Twp. and formerly of Beech Grove, IN, passed away peacefully on October 7, 2012. She was 94 years old.

Anne was born June 10, 1918 in Indianapolis, IN to Wilburn Smith & Mary Moriarity. Raised primarily by her grandmothers after her mothers death, Anne had a special relationship with her father. Wilburn once drove in the Indy 500 and had taught her to drive before she was 12; she would have a lifelong affection for driving and long road trips. Her paternal grandmother, Harriet Smith, taught Anne how to play the piano, which she continued to do joyfully until just months before her death. After her graduation from Shortridge High School, Anne met George Joseph Okey while on a group date with the Catholic Youth Organization. Following a lengthy courtship, George proposed to Anne on Valentines Day and the couple were married July 4, 1941 at st. Patricks Church in Indianapolis. It was her supportive, loving relationship with George and her deep faith in the Lord, that sustained her through the heartbreak of having 13 pregnancies and only three children surviving. Theresa, Maggie and George Michael were her greatest accomplishments and an ever-present reminder of how fragile and precious life is. In the 1980s, Anne went back to school to the University of Indianapolis and became a Para Legal. Her entire family came to the ceremony and celebrated her college graduation. She truly enjoyed working and was proud of her career as Executive Secretary to the President of at Bryant Heating and later as a Para Legal at McHale, Cook & Welch.

In her younger years, Anne was an avid swimmer and later took up bowling. She was a good cook, famous for her candied sweet potatoes and was an active member of the Red Hat Society. Known for her infectious giggle and bright smile, Anne was always willing to help her friends and family, especially her eight grandchildren. She was always there for each of them, first to roll up her sleeves and pitch in whenever she could. And if you could reward her efforts with a box of Fannie Mae chocolates, you were sure to be her to her favorite!

Preceded in death by her beloved husband, George Joseph and son, George Michael.

Survived by her loving daughters, Theresa (Stephen) Davidson, Maggie Okey; grandchildren, Laura (Joshua) Russeau, Michael (Chanda) Davidson, Scott Davidson, Christina, Jennifer, Ben (Samantha), Nick and Nathan Okey; great grandchildren, Hannah, Nola, Lucy, Jayden, Colton, Bryson and Corban. Also survived by her aunt Agnes Reese, extended family members and dear friends including her feline friend, Sammy.
