Alice Bergliot Johansen, 91, died on Sunday Feb. 13, 2011 at Huron Woods in Ypsilanti, Mi.
Alice was the daughter of Thomas and Inga Andersen and was born and raised in Jersey City, NJ. She graduated from Henry Snyder High School in Jersey City, NJ in January 1937. Alice was the salutatorian of her graduating class and in her speech she spoke of women's rights. She married Howard G. Johansen in 1943. They moved to the Indian Lake section of Denville in 1949 and stayed for thirty years while they raised their family. In 1979 they moved to Whiting, NJ where they stayed until Howard's death in 2002. Alice then moved out to Michigan where she lived until her death.
As a young woman she worked as a secretary for Chase Manhattan Bank. When her children got older she went back to work first as a secretary in the Mountain Lakes school district and then as the school secretary at Lakeview Elementary School in Denville for about 10 years.
She was an active member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Denville, enjoyed many activities with the Indian Lake Community Club including the bowling league and she was a life member of Sons of Norway.
Her husband Howard G. died in 2002 and her son Gilbert A. died in 2007.
She is survived by her daughters Nancy Schank and her husband William of Howell, Mi and Phyllis Weisnet and her husband Joseph of Denville, NJ.
She is also survived by her six grandchildren Karen Schank, Jennifer Smith and her husband Burck, Daniel Schank and his wife Jenny, Stephen Schank, Jessica Weisnet and William Weisnet and four great-grandchildren Zachary Smith, Quinlan Smith, Sawyer Smith, and Madeleine Schank.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday Feb. 19, 2011 at 10:00 AM at the Norman Dean Home for Services, 16 Righter Ave., Denville, NJ www.normandean.com. Friends may visit with the family on Friday from 6-9 PM. Please light a candle on the Norman Dean website in Alice's memory.
